Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Annual Scientific Meeting 2023 The ALSGBI is the UK’s primary laparoscopic surgical Association established to promote laparoscopic surgery among surgeons and trainees in the UK. It was founded 26 years ago and has gone from a small group to a large professional Association that boasts members from around the globe. We are a charitable organisation whose primary role is to support training and education in a broad range of minimal access surgeries among surgeons of all experience levels ranging from junior trainees through to long time established Consultants. - The ALSGBI was formed on April 22, 1994, in Harrogate, through the amalgamation of the Society of Minimally Invasive General Surgeons (SMIGS) and the British Surgical Stapling Group (BSSG).
- Since then, the ALSGBI has become the main voice for laparoscopic surgeons in the UK and Ireland.
- Mission and Activities:
- The ALSGBI is a charitable organization dedicated to supporting training and education in a broad range of minimal access surgeries.

- Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM):
- The ALSGBI hosts an annual scientific meeting where experts present research, share knowledge, and discuss advancements in laparoscopic surgery.
- The David Dunn Medal is awarded to the presenter of the best paper at the ASM, in memory of Mr. David Dunn, a former ALSGBI president.
- The David Dunn Travelling Scholarship provides funding for a British trainee or consultant within 5 years of appointment to learn new skills in laparoscopic surgery abroad.
