Learning Objectives
As an example, for the lecture on cervical cancer screening, a gap is the overscreening of women less than 21 years of age, whereas national guidelines since 2009 have recommended initiation of screening at age 21 years. Further, the most recent guidelines recommended a screening interval with cytology alone every 3 years for women ages 21-29 and screening with cytology and HPV every 5 years for women 30 years of age and greater. By overscreening young women, unnecessary testing and treatment often ensues, creating increased patient risk and harm, as well as increased health care costs.
Upon completion of the lecture(s) and case(s) on cervical cancer screening, the participant will:
- Describe the appropriate cervical cancer screening test and interval based upon patient age
- Discuss follow-up testing and surveillance for abnormal screening results
- Apply the most recent updated national cervical cancer screening guidelines to annual well-women visits
Intended Audience
The target audience for the program is practicing obstetricians and gynecologists, residents and fellows. The program is focused on closing professional practice gaps in patient care provided by obstetricians and gynecologists through the increased adoption of best practice standards.
