Cleveland Clinic Oncology ICU Summit 2026

The Cleveland Clinic Oncology ICU Summit 2026 examines the problems that arise when cancer treatment and critical illness overlap. Led by Simon Mucha, MD, the program brings together oncology, hematology, pharmacy, and critical care perspectives on respiratory failure, treatment toxicity, sepsis, and hematologic emergencies. Sessions address advanced bronchoscopy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, targeted therapies, and CAR T-cell complications, alongside prognosis and goals-of-care discussions. The two half-day meeting took place on October 1–2, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, with virtual participation. Its case-based discussions are relevant to clinicians caring for patients with cancer in emergency, inpatient, and intensive care settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

1. Describe the mechanisms and toxicity profiles of major classes of novel anticancer therapies, including targeted agents, immune checkpoint inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates, bispecific antibodies, and cellular therapies.
2. Apply evidence-based approaches to the evaluation and management of acute respiratory failure in patients with cancer.
3. Differentiate sepsis, disease progression, and treatment-related toxicities in critically ill oncology patients to support timely diagnosis and management.
4. Recognize and manage key toxicities associated with CAR T-cell therapy, including cytokine release syndrome, neurotoxicity, and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis.
5. Incorporate evolving evidence on treatment response, prognosis, and toxicity into multidisciplinary communication, shared decision-making, and care planning.
6. Identify practical strategies for effective, patient centered interdisciplinary care delivery for critical care for oncology patients across practice settings.
