Dermatopathology in Paradise reviews skin biopsy interpretation through inflammatory, infectious and neoplastic conditions. Topics range from spongiotic and psoriasiform dermatitis to melanocytic lesions, cutaneous lymphoma, vascular disorders, alopecia and pediatric tumors. Case-based sessions focus on diagnostic pitfalls, clinicopathologic correlation and the appropriate use of ancillary testing.
The Scientific Symposiums International course took place October 12–15, 2026 in Maui, Hawaii, under the direction of Philip E. LeBoit. The original 20-topic list includes presentations by Maxwell Fung, Joyce Lee, Daniel Miller and Philip LeBoit. It is retained below with the learning objectives; the published program does not independently confirm every supplied recording or include access to the provider’s streaming platform.
Learning Objectives
After completing the educational program, participants should be better able to:
- Differentiate spongiotic and psoriasiform dermatitis using key histopathologic features and appropriate clinicopathologic correlation.
- Recognize unusual variants of common inflammatory skin diseases and avoid interpretive errors caused by overlapping morphological patterns.
- Identify the histological features of cutaneous infections and distinguish them from noninfectious inflammatory and neoplastic mimics.
- Apply appropriate diagnostic criteria when evaluating melanocytic nevi, dysplastic nevi, melanoma in situ, and melanocytic lesions at special anatomical sites.
- Recognize important diagnostic pitfalls involving melanocytic tumors and use calibrated histopathologic criteria to improve consistency.
- Identify histopathologic features associated with scarring and non-scarring alopecia.
- Evaluate vascular anomalies, occlusive vasculitis, and vasculopathies through appropriate morphological assessment and clinical correlation.
- Distinguish cutaneous lymphomas from reactive lymphoid infiltrates and recognize common diagnostic challenges in lymphoid skin pathology.
- Assess challenging pediatric cutaneous tumors and interpret complex inpatient dermatopathology findings.
- Apply contemporary diagnostic approaches to immunobullous diseases and other inflammatory disorders.
- Select appropriate ancillary investigations using relevant Appropriate Use Criteria in dermatopathology.
- Improve microscopic diagnostic reasoning through pattern recognition, case-based interpretation, and examination at different magnifications.
